Port Authority hotly in favour of thick sweater day

Feb 13, 2009 Port

Antwerp Port Authority aims to play a pioneering role when it comes to policy on sustainable energy and the environment. One of its many initiatives in this area is participation in Thick Sweater Day, which has now become an annual event. On Friday 13 February the heating in the Authority’s office buildings will be set two degrees lower than normal, thus lowering CO2 emissions on that day by a good 14%.

As part of its sustainable energy and environmental policy, the Port Authority will be taking advantage of Thick Sweater Day to investigate the savings in CO2 emissions and energy costs that could be achieved if the temperature in all buildings were to be set to 19 or 20°C.

Thick Sweater Day is an annual campaign organised by the Flemish Government. The aim is to show that everyone can save energy and reduce CO2 emissions by taking a few simple measures. Last year more than 680 companies and local authority departments took part, resulting in a reduction of 246 tonnes in CO2 emissions and a total cost saving of 60,000 euros.
