Dubai World, parent company of terminal operator DP World, laid off 100 employees, Middle East news outlets reported Wednesday.
The company, the government-run holding company of the U.A.E. state, also has under its umbrella the Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority and property giant Nakheel, which last November laid off 15 percent of its workforce as demand for construction slumped.
Those laid off were mid- and lower-level staffers in the company's corporate services division. None apparently were directly involved with DP World, one of the world's largest container terminal operators.
The consolidation follows a prolonged period of intense business expansion," Dubai World said in a statement. "In reviewing staffing levels, the group aims to bring new efficiencies in its operations for future growth opportunities.
When launched as a holding company in 2006, Dubai World had 50,000 employees in 100 cities worldwide.
