H THOMAS Kornegay announced his retirement following 37 years of service of which he spent 17 as Port of Houston Authority's (PHA) executive director citing his immediate reasons for departure because of family bereavement.
Mr Kornegay is credited with developing the master plan for the Fentress Bracewell Barbours Cut Container Terminal, which opened in 1976 and the completion of the US$700 million Houston Ship Channel deepening and widening project.
Port chairman Jim Edmonds is to call a special meeting of the Port Commission and following his announcement he commented on the loss of one of the great builders of Houston and Harris County.
The PHA posted its ninth consecutive year of growth as a result of its 2008 operations and a record year for the handling of general cargo and containers.
