boost to Amsterdam as Gateway to Europe

NYK – which owns 100 percent of the Ceres Paragon Terminal – has decided to sell the majority of its shares in this Amsterdam-based container terminal to HPH. This will enable the Ceres Paragon Terminal to better present itself as an independent player to shipping companies. HPH also owns the ECT terminal in Rotterdam. This development is part of a wider trend toward closer cooperation between the Ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Another recent initiative along these lines is the Port Community system, which was jointly set up by both ports.

Amsterdam Alderman Freek Ossel, who is responsible for port affairs, is particularly content with HPH’s arrival in Amsterdam, commenting, “This is an interesting development for our port that is creating many opportunities. But it’s also good news for the Port of Rotterdam. We’re working together ever more closely, as can be seen in the Betuwe Line (rail line that connects the two ports with the German hinterland) and in the port communication systems. The two ports form an economic engine for the Netherlands, creating a lot of direct and indirect employment. We must work together whenever we can.”

Hutchison Port Holdings

ECT, located in the Port of Rotterdam, is part of Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH). Hutchison Port Holdings is the world's leading port investor, developer and operator with interests in a total of 50 ports in 26 countries throughout Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Australasia. These ports are either major ports serving a large hinterland or ports acting as logistics hubs or having the potential to do so. HPH also owns a number of transport-related service companies. In 2007, the HPH Group handled a total of 66.3 million TEU worldwide.
