The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment of Mr. Craig Rix to the Toronto Port Authority's board of directors as the federal representative, for a term of three years.
"I am pleased that Mr. Rix has agreed to serve on the board of the Toronto Port Authority," said Minister Cannon. "His experience in the statutory, regulatory and public policy making process will serve the board well."
Mr. Rix holds a bachelor of laws from the University of Windsor, a master of arts in public policy and administration, and a bachelor of arts with honours from McMaster University. He is a partner with the law firm Hicks Morley where he works out of their Toronto offices. His areas of practice include labour and employment advocacy, public policy advocacy and strategic planning and governance, representing employers in both the public and private sectors. Mr. Rix's professional and community affiliations include the boards of directors of the Canadian Association of Counsel to Employers and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. He is also on the advisory board of The Dominion Institute and a member of the Ontario Economic Summit Steering Council.
The Toronto Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established to manage the Port of Toronto under the Canada Marine Act. As a CPA, the Toronto Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial lenders.
The Port of Toronto, situated in the downtown core of Canada's largest city, provides transportation, distribution, storage and container services to businesses in the Greater Toronto Area, and serves as an important link to other ports in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System. Immediate access to marine, highway and rail facilities makes the port a transportation hub for Ontario, northwestern Quebec, upstate New York and Ohio.
