Sharp drop in cargo handling in Tallinn

Jan 12, 2009 Port

The ports in AS Tallinna Sadam (Port of Tallinn) handled 29.1 million tons of cargo last year, down by 19.3 per cent compared to the 36 million tons in 2007. The handling last year was at the same level as in 2001. After that cargo handling grew to the record level of 41.3 million tons in 2006.

The largest drop was in handling of dry bulk cargoes and wet cargoes, both traditional transit cargoes in the port of Muuga. 3 million tons of dry bulk is 62 per cent less than in 2007. About 3 million tons of coal and 1.2 million tons of fertilizers found its way to other ports instead of Muuga. Wet cargoes were down by 8.2 per cent to 20.5 million tons. Container throughput stopped at 180,927 TEU and ro-ro units were at the same level as in 2007. The port company is focusing on those cargoes for the future together with terminal operators, one example is that Muuga CT before year end inaugurated a new container crane for faster handling of container trains.
