GUANGZHOU port's dredging of a 17-metre deep, 243 metre wide, 71.8 kilometre channel to accommodate 150,000-ton ships has been received the go-ahead from Beijing, reports Xinhua.
The CNY2.67 billion (US$395 million) project is to start next year so that mega ships can go between Nansha seaport facilities to inland Guangzhou. Some CNY953 million will come from the central government, while Guangzhou will provide the rest.
Guangzhou port currently owns 19 berths of which Nansha Port Area offers ten, 100,000-tonne berths in phase one and two, which provide 100 international shipping services. It has become the China's third biggest port I in terms of container throughput, surpassed only by Shanghai and Shenzhen, while holding its own in the world's 10 largest ports.
