Chittagong, Jan 8 (bdnews24.com) – The government will move to set up a deep sea port in Chittagong as the Awami League had pledged in its election manifesto, shipping minister Afsarul Amin said on Thursday.
If the deep sea port is set up it will change the outlook not only for the people of Chittagong, but the whole country will be benefited, Amin told reporters at Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport.
This is his first visit to the port city since taking up as shipping minister.
Chittagong port will be transformed into a modern and active port in cooperation with all people. We will also maintain the continuity of the structural changes, he said.
On other steps for the development of the port city, the newly appointed minister said: We will take steps to stop water logging, traffic gridlock, ensure drinking water and tackle the power crisis.
The government would also work to curb terrorism, extortion and rid the city of corruption, he said.
Afsar sought assistance of the people of Chittagong for the development of the city.
Chittagong mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, divisional commissioner Hossain Jamil, deputy commissioner Ashraf Shamim among others received the new minister in the airport.
