The Shekou Container Terminal, one of the facilities that make up the Port of Shenzhen, saw a 24 percent increase in container volume in 2008, according to port statistics released Monday.
SCT hit its 2008 goal of 4.1 million TEUs on Dec. 30, helped by its newest berth, which opened in September and added 700,000 TEUs of annual capacity to the terminal.
The nearby Chiwan Container Terminal, also part of Shenzhen, saw volume rise only 0.6 percent through the first 11 months of 2008, to 5.5 million. Chiwan has capacity for more than 6 million TEUs.
The private Chinese terminal operators China Merchants Holdings and Modern Terminals have a stake in both terminals.
