Hanjin Shipping signed a 30-year lease agreement with JAXPORT (Jacksonville Port) yesterday after the signing of an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) back in October, 2007.
The signing ceremony took place at Jacksonville Port with VIP guests from each party. They include G.S. Choi, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Hanjin Shippingбпs Terminal Division, William Rooney, Vice President and Managing Director of Hanjin Shipping's U.S. Regional Headquarters, Chairman William C. Mason and Executive Director Frederik R. Ferrin of JAXPORT. Also, officials from the Jacksonville city government joined to celebrate the event.
Hanjin Shipping Jacksonville Container Terminal, scheduled to open in 2011, will sit on 88 acres of land and accommodate an annual volume of approximately 800,000 TEU. Also, it will be introducing automated technology to improve efficiency and productivity.
G. S. Choi, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Hanjin Shipping's Terminal Division stated: Despite the few on-going negotiations, we have no doubt of the success this project will become. He added, The introduction of our dedicated terminal in Jacksonville will ensure constant availability of berths for our AWE (All Water East Coast) services, upgrade customer service with improved schedules. Furthermore, being Hanjin Shipping's first dedicated terminal in the U.S. East Coast, the terminal will establish itself as a logistics hub for the newly emerging market in the Northern Florida and Caribbean Sea areas. It will also allow us to absorb the demand to come in the U.S. East Coast after the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2015.
Meanwhile, Hanjin Shipping currently operates 12 dedicated terminals world-wide (4 domestic, 8 overseas) and has signed memorandums of understanding on developing dedicated terminals in various logistics hubs around the globe including Tan Cang-Cai Mep, Vietnam and Algeciras, Spain.
