Throughput of Kaliningrad Sea Commercial Port up 3.6% to 4 mln t in Jan-Oct 08

In January-October, 2008, Kaliningrad Sea Commercial Port OJSC handled 4.059.3 million tonnes of cargo (3.6%, year-on-year), the company reports.


In the reported period, transshipment of export cargo totaled 2.949.3 million tonnes (+1.4%, year-on-year) including 872,900 tonnes  of coal and coke (up 2.3 times) and 69,000 tonnes of timber (+3.6%).


Transshipment of rolled metal fell by 18.3%, year-on-year, to 859,000 tonnes, heavy fuel oil - 186,500 tonnes (-50%), containers - 134,500 tonnes (-15.2%).


Transshipment of import cargo amounted to 1.110 million tonnes of cargo (+9.8%) including 503,600 of construction materials (two-fold increase), while transshipment of containerized cargo fell by 17.5% to 458,800 tonnes.


Kaliningrad is the western-most port of Russia, located at the South-Eastern part of the Baltic Sea at the mouth of Pregolia river. The port with the round-the-year navigation is connected with the sea by Kaliningrad Marine Canal. The port has 20 berths with total length exceeding 3 kilometers. The depth at 18 cargo berths is from 8 to 9 meters. The port is capable of handling coal, coke, ore, metal, ferrous alloys, scrap metal, grain, sugar, fertilizers (dry and liquid), containers, timber, foodstuffs, refrigerated cargo, paper, cellulose.
