Zhuhai berth ready to open by end of year

Nov 4, 2008 Port

A Hutchison Port Holdings-backed terminal on the west side of the Pearl River Delta is ready to open its first phase by the end of the year after it received a second delivery of quay cranes and rubber-tire gantry cranes last week.

The Zhuhai International Container Terminal, located on the far south end of the western PRD, near Macau, now has four post-Panamax cranes and 12 RTGs. Plans are for the terminal to eventually have two container berths with eight quay cranes on 824 meters of berth, with 24 RTGs and 56 hectares of yard space. The latest cranes to arrive are super-post-Panamax cranes, signaling the terminal's intent to lure large mainline vessels. Until now, ZICT, a joint venture between Hutchison and the local government, has been a feeder port.
