This week the Port of Gothenburg was visited by Prime Minister Fredrik Rreinfeldt and the three other party leaders that make up the present Swedish right-wing coalition government. At a press conference held at the port infrastructure investments were presented. The Port of Gothenburg was highlighted specifically as it serves the whole of Scandinavian industry.
“This is encouraging news,” says Kårestedt, President of the Port of Gothenburg. “Iit demonstrates
that the government is fully aware of the significance of the Port of Gothenburg as the largest port in the Nordic region.”
The four-party alliance emphasised in particular the importance of the continued growth of railborne freight traffic. This is completely in line with the Port of Gothenburg’s focus on increasing the volume of goods moved by rail to and from the port.
At present there are 24 rail shuttles with daily departures to the same number of destinations in Sweden. Some 40 per cent of container goods are transported by rail instead of by road and the proportion is increasing steadily.
“At present everyone wants to move freight by rail – shipping lines, forwarding
companies and export and import companies. We are now hoping
for further positive news in the government’s future long-term plans,” says Magnus Kårestedt.
