World ports commit to improving air quality

Jul 14, 2008 Port

Fifty-five ports from around the world committed to reducing CO2 emissions and improve air quality at the closing session of the C40 World Ports Climate Conference held in Rotterdam July 9-11.

The International Association for Ports and Harbors (IAPH) will prepare some concrete measures to build on the World Ports Climate Declaration including working on a standard method to quantify the CO2 emissions, and the development of a global indexing system that will be used to reward clean ships and punish the polluters. A follow-up conference is scheduled for November in Los Angeles.

In a video message, former U.S. President Bill Clinton welcomed the ports' commitment and said he is ready to further support the initiative through his Clinton Climate initiative.
