Maersk to postpone Asia-North Europe rate increase

May 27, 2011 Port

Maersk Line said Wednesday it is postponing by a month the implementation of the general rate increase that it planned to apply June 1 on Asia-North Europe trade lanes.

“The new effective date of the general rate increase of $500 per 40-foot dry container is July 1,” Maersk said in a trade notice.

The Danish carrier did not provide any reason why it had postponed the date of the GRI.

The GRI postponement does not cover the westbound trades from Asia to the Mediterranean, which will attract an increase of $250 per 20-foot equivalent unit as of June 1.

Separately, Maersk said it will seek a rate increase on cargo shipped from the Far East and Asia to South Europe. Starting June 1, the increase will be $250 per 20-foot and $500 per 40-foot/45-foot container.
