Hong Kong’s Q1 box volume is up 2.4% to 5,56m TEUs

Container throughput of the port of Hong Kong (China) in January-March, 2011 increased by 2.4% from the same period of 2010, to 5,56 million TEUs, the Port Authority statistics said.


In March, container traffic rose by 3.1% to 1,96 million TEUs.


Three-month container volume at the largest terminal Kwai Chung increased by 3.7% to 4,08 million TEUs, while other terminals reported a 1.1 percent drop to 1,47m TEUs. In March Kwai Chung handled 1,41m TEUs (+6,5%), other terminals – 550,000 TEUs (-4.7%)


Port of Hong Kong is one of the largest ports in the world. In 2009, Hong Kong port's container volume dropped year-over-year by 14.6% to 20,9 million TEUs. In 2010, the port’s container trade totaled 23,69m TEUs.
