The Peruvian government has selected APM Terminals (APMT) over other major global players to run Terminal Muelle Norte in the Port of Callao, as part of its initiative to modernise its port infrastructure to meet the country’s growing trade needs.
The concession contract will be signed within the next month, with APMT taking over operations 60 days thereafter.
APMT is to invest US$749m to modernise and “transform” Terminal Muelle Norte into a modern multipurpose terminal for a range of cargoes, including containers, general cargo, ro-ro, break bulk, as well as accommodating cruise ships.
At full capacity, the terminal will be able to handle 2.9m teu and 9.9m tonnes of non-containerised cargo.
“APM Terminals is focusing expansion plans on the fast growing economies around the world and is continually strengthening its Latin American scope of operations. Projects like this enable us to build on our strengths and facilitate growth in the national and regional economies and trade,” said Peder Sondergaard, APMT’s senior vice president and head of new terminals.
The company said that its vision is to transform Terminal Muelle Norte into an economic generator for the people of Peru.
This latest move adds to APMT’s activities in Latin America, which includes ports, projects and inland terminals in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica and Panama.
