Mombasa port opens new US$5.9 million box depot

Apr 8, 2011 Port

A new KES500 million (US$5.97 million) container depot at the Mombasa Container Terminal (MCT) has opened for business in Kenya.

It is hoped the new container freight depot that is capable of handing 2,200 TEU and 650 motor vehicles will ease congestion at Mombasa port.

MCT chairman Samson Ndegwa said the new facility offers a one stop centre to deal with all the documentation processes, and is capable of handling full container loads, motor vehicles and other bulk consignments, consolidation and deconsolidation of cargo.

"It's a green environment, there is a waste water recycling plant capable of recycling up to 2,000 litres of water per day and harvest rain water to supplement the borehole," he told the Nairobi Star.
