Container Terminal for Taiwaneese Port

Oct 5, 2007 Port

Taiwan's port of Kaohsiung has awarded Yangming Marine Corps a 50-year concessional contract to build and run a new 16-metre (draft) deep-water container terminal. The current depth of Kaohsiung Harbor's container terminals is 14.5 metres. The port has been inviting international tenders to build the new terminal in a concerted effort to revive its past success.

In a clear indication of the port's flagging appeal and competitiveness, reports say that Yangming was the only firm to submit a bid. According to the terms of the the build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract, Yangming is scheduled to construct four 375-metre wharves with the first wharf coming into service in 2011 and the rest following by 2013.

Local press has estimated first phase construction to cost around $364 million. The new facilities are scheduled to handle at least 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year.
