Freight volume handled at Aktau International Commercial Sea Port (Port of Aktau, Kazakhstan) in the I quarter of 2011 amounted to over 2,831,000 tons of dry cargo and petroleum products, or 18.4% down from last year’s figures, the state-run enterprise press service said.
In March 2011, the port handled 971,600 tons of cargo, also a 22.3-percent drop as compared with March, 2010.
The monthly volume of crude oil and petroleum products shrank by 22.4% (vs figures in March 2010) to 720,200 tons, handling of dry cargo declined by 28.6% to 251,280 tons, including 113,800 tons of metal (-44%) and 1,400 tons of grain (-97.8%).
Port of Aktau, located on the east coast of the Caspian Sea, is the premier port of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The port is the gateway for international trade flows passing the country. The Aktau terminals handle a broad range of dry cargoes, crude oil and petroleum products. In 2009 the Port of Aktau cargo volume rose 26.7% to 13,951,000 tons.
