EASTERN China's coastal province of Shandong plans to spend CNY8.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) on port and shipping projects this year, adding another 50 million tonnes' capacity to its ports to raise the total to 500 million tonnes, Xinhua reports.

The province will build 15 new deepwater berths this year and speed up the development of the Dongjiakou port area in Qingdao port, the Lanshan port area in Rizhao and Yantai port's west port area.

In the upcoming five to ten years, Shandong aims to turn itself into the largest ore handling base and one of the major crude oil and coal transportation hub in China, as well as one of the major container shipping hub in northeast Asia.
