Oman's Qaboos port resumes full operations after staff boycott

Mar 21, 2011 Port

Oman's Sultan Qaboos port resumed full operations on Thursday after port service employees who had boycotted on Wednesday returned to work, shipping sources said.

"On Wednesday, the port was still open but there was very limited work getting done because half of the staff didn't show up, but now things have started to get back to normal," said a shipping source in Oman.

The port in Sohar, Oman's main industrial centre, is also operating without disruption, a port official said.

Regional unrest has hit the Gulf Arab state of Oman with protestors calling for political reform, pay rises and more jobs. Private security guards blocked Oman's main airport on Wednesday, witnesses said.

On Tuesday, workers at state oil firm Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) had demonstrated for higher wages at company headquarters and oil and gas fields, the first such stoppage at a Gulf energy firm since unrest swept the region.
