LA-LB February boxes up 8pc year on year, but off 12pc month to month

Mar 18, 2011 Port

THE ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach posted an overall 12 per cent decline to 1.01 million TEU in container cargo in February compared to January, but increased eight per cent year-on-year.

February's month-to-month decline was blamed on the Chinese New Year when mainland factories close for two weeks, reported London's Containerisation International. Chinese New Year falls in either January or February and in whichever month that is, suffers a decline as does the transpacific trade.

Long Beach posted 233,600 TEU in inbound laden boxes, a 12.4 per cent year-on-year increase; February Los Angeles throughput came to 275,886 TEU, increasing 3.2 per cent against the same month last year.

The National Retail Federation forecasts cargo will increase six per cent year on year while the Journal of Commerce PIERS analysts estimate transpacific cargo demand will grow between seven and eight per cent in 2011.
