Taicang's direct shipping cargo to Taiwan up nearly 90pc

Mar 14, 2011 Port

JIANGSU province's port of Taicang handled 347,000 tonnes of direct shipping trade cargo between Mainland and Taiwan in 2010, up 87.7 per cent year on year. Container cargo increased 88.1 per cent to 42,000 TEU, Xinhua reports.

Taicang is the China home port of the Norwegian start-up The Containership Company, which despite a first year US$7 million loss, has caused quite a stir running its no-frill shuttle to LA from the previously obscure port 60 miles up stream from Shanghai.

There were 86 sailings of cross-strait direct shipping services last year, increasing 65.4 per cent. Value of the trade cargo surged 174.3 per cent to US$3.2 billion.

Taicang currently offers two weekly container shipping services to Taiwan, calling at Keelung, Kaohsiung and Taichung.
