Mombasa privatisation plans stall

Mar 9, 2011 Port

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga this week threw out a Transport Ministry plan to sell the country’s main port, according to government sources.

However, a World Bank report published last year expressed fears that the port was already operating at full capacity and that privatisation was the best route to boost cargo handling.

The busiest port in East Africa, Mombasa serves landlocked countries in the region as well as Tanzania and Somalia.

Transport Minister Amos Kimunya had ruled out selling the Mombasa port as one of the options that will be considered in improving port capacity, but added that there were “other public-private participation models that can be employed to improve port efficiency”.
