THE Port of New York and New Jersey last year handled a total of 5,292,020 TEU, representing an increase of 16 per cent over 2009.
A breakdown of the results show that the volume of loaded containers totalled 4,097,420 TEU, with loaded imports rising by 14.9 per cent last year to 2,579,093 TEU and exports growing by nine per cent to 1,518,327 TEU in 2010 compared to the previous year, according to figures compiled by port authorities.
Total general cargo throughput rose to 32.2 million tonnes, up from 28.2 million tonnes in 2009, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce, citing data from the US Bureau of Census. In 2010 general cargo imports were up by 14.3 per cent year on year to 21 million tonnes, while general cargo exports grew by 13.9 per cent to 11.2 million tonnes.
It added that the port last year handled 376,770 containers through its ExpressRail system, an increase of 22.3 per cent compared to the previous year.
