Mar 7, 2011 Port

China is mulling over cooperation between two geographically close ports in Taiwan and China, a senior Chinese official said in Taipei.

“The two ports are very close and we will have many opportunities,” Chen Yunlin, the president of the Beijing-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) told reporters during a visit to the Port of Taipei.

“We are visiting (the port) because we have such an idea (for cooperation),” Chen added.

However, he did not elaborate on the details of the proposed cooperation between the Port of Taipei and the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone in China’s Fujian Province which are separated by a mere 122 nautical miles and a three hour sailing time.

The Port of Taipei is one of Taiwan’s new international cargo ports, and handles 80% to 90% of Taiwan’s automobile imports and exports.
