Shandong's port box capacity will reach 20 million TEU by 2015

ACCORDING to Shandong province's development plan for the next five years, its sea port cargo capacity will exceed 1 billion tonnes while container handling capacity will reach 20 million TEU by 2015.


Meanwhile, the province's river port capacity will hit 70 million tonnes while throughput will reach 100 million tonnes, said Xinhua's report.


In the past five-year period from 2006 to 2010, Shandong spent CNY 38.4 billion (US$5.8 billion) on port and shipping projects. One hundred and seventy-nine new berths were added to the port, raising the total to 473. 197 of them are over 10,000 tonnes. The annual throughput capacity was raised to 456 million tonnes, up by 207 million tonnes.


Provincial navigable waters reached 1,150 kilometres. The number of river port berths totalled 273 with an aggregate capacity of 45 million tonnes.


On the other hand, Shandong will also build 1,800 kilometres of new expressways over five years, bringing the total to 6,000 kilometres, covering 95 per cent's cities and towns in the province.
