Port of Felixstowe Achieves Environmental and Safety Certification

The Port of Felixstowe is celebrating a rare double after being awarded certificates that recognise the quality of its Environmental and Health and Safety management systems. The UK’s leading container port was awarded the OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety, and ISO 14001 Environmental Management systems standards, on 22nd February by NQA.


Auditors from the assessment and certification body spent a total of 13 days at the port over a six-month period, inspecting the company’s policies and procedures, including Management Systems for Safety and Environment, continual compliance with legal requirements and health and safety monitoring.


David Gledhill, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Ltd, which owns the Port of Felixstowe, said: “To be registered to the two standards at the same time is a significant achievement and confirms the port’s continuing commitment to its people and the environment. The standards recognise the port’s commitment to go beyond mandatory requirements and promote continuous improvement, and are a great credit to our environmental and health and safety teams.”

OHSAS 18001 is an Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series for health and safety management systems. It is intended to help organizations to control occupational health and safety risks. ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for the environmental management of businesses. It prescribes controls for those activities that have an effect on the environment. These include the use of natural resources, handling and treatment of waste and energy consumption.
