SMUGGLED electronics valued at INR1.11 crore (US$24.5 million) have been seized and a man arrested by India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) near the Chennai airport at Meenambakkam.

DRI sources said the 500-kilogramme consignment, declared as auto parts, reached the Chennai airport from Singapore by Singapore Airlines. Following a tip about the involvement of a Chennai-based smuggling gang, DRI officials were monitoring the air cargo complex.

"Around 8pm Saturday, our officials intercepted a vehicle carrying the consignment, in 15 cartons, outside the air cargo complex. On inspection, we found digital cameras, handycams, camera flashes and batteries worth INR1.11 crore," said C Rajan, additional Director General, DRI (Chennai).

Ramesh, 33, a resident of Royapuram, who imported the consignment destined for India Impex Logistics Pvt Ltd, Meenambakkam, from the cargo complex, was arrested, said Mr Rajan.
