MARITIME officers from 11 countries have participated in a five-day study trip to Singapore to learn more about the commercial, regulatory and operational aspects of port management in the city state.
Held by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), 13 students from the World Maritime University (WMU) Masters of Science (Port Management) programme took part in the exercise. The students were from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Nigeria, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, Thailand, Turkey, Yemen and Vietnam.
The students gained insights from MPA officials on developing and managing the port industry and maritime cluster. They also met representatives from PSA International who informed them about container terminal operations and gave them a tour of such facilities. The students also visited the MPA's Integrated Simulation Centre that provides training for ship officers.
"We hope their visit to Singapore Port will not only offer them first-hand experience in port management, the briefings by relevant officials here will also provide them with more integrated and holistic understanding of managing ports," said Captain Segar, MPA's group director for Hub Port.
The WMU students will also be visiting ports in Holland, Germany and Sweden.
