CONTAINER volumes at the Port of Tacoma in Washington state increased 13.3 per cent to 105,289 TEU in January after a 15 per cent loss in the same month in 2010.
For most of 2010, the rebound experienced at ports everywhere eluded Tacoma, which only enjoyed an 11.8 per cent year-on-year increase to 130,332 TEU in December after a first half of declines then flat volumes throughout the third and most of the fourth quarter.
International container movement increased 18 per cent to 71,902 TEU, reported American Shipper with movement to and from Alaska and Hawaii up only 4.5 per cent to 33,387 TEU. International and domestic intermodal volume was up 12 per cent.
Overall, the port's 2010 volume fell 5.8 per cent to 1.45 million TEU with export volumes falling 19.8 per cent to 337,538 TEU.
