More Chinese New Year rollovers than ever before: forwarders

Feb 24, 2011 Port

MORE cargo rollovers have been reported in the run up to the factory shutdowns ahead of the recent Chinese New Year, leading to late arrivals in Europe of shipments from China.

Forwarders told London's International Freighting Weekly that the pre-New Year rush to the docks led to a dearth of vessel capacity and many containers being left behind to wait for another ship, or taken off at another port to await later transshipment.

While this is an annual problem some felt it was worse than ever this year with one firm saying that 10 per cent of his boxes were rolled over, said the report.

"The carriers are either leaving it behind, or they'll take it from China and pull it off the ship at a transhipment port such as Singapore or Port Klang," said one UK forwarder. "They want to get the booking and move it out of China. They know the vessels after Chinese New Year are going to be empty."
