According to the cargo handling turnover in the Eastern Baltic ports Klaipeda Seaport (Lithuania) in January registered the highest cargo handling turnover and outpaced not only the neighbouring Seaports of Riga and Ventspils but even the Joint Port of Tallinn.

In January of 2011 Klaipeda Port handled 3,18 million tons of marine cargo, the overallcargo handling growth was 23,1 % comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.

In January of 2011 the cargo handling volumes in Klaipėda Port increased in all cargo groups – in general cargo group (+38,3 pc), in dry and bulk cargo group (+59,8 pc) and in liquefied cargo group (+12,5 pc).

Throughout the analysed period the overall cargo handling of the Ports of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia equalled to 11 142,5 thousand tons, were the part of Klaipėda Port constituted 28,54 percent.
It should be noted that in case the cargo handling results should be calculated including Butinge Terminal the overall cargo handling turnover of Lithuania Ports should yet more exceed the cargo handling results of neighbouring ports – competitors. The common Klaipeda Port and Butinge Terminal handling turnover in January of 2011 was 3,98 mln. t.

In January of 2011 the overall cargo handling of Latvia Seaports reached up to 4 962,2 thousand tons. During the afore mentioned period Riga Seaport handled 2 698,1 thousand tons, 1 878,0 thousand tons were handled in Ventspils Seaport and 386,1 thousand tons were handled in Liepaja Port. The comparison of cargo handling results registered only in Riga and Klaipeda Seaports showed that Klaipeda Port considerably outpaced Riga Seaport – nearly by half million tons (482,2 thousand tons).

January of 2011 was rather „ dry“ to Joint Port of Tallinn, comprising 5 ports. Throughout the mentioned period the Port of Tallinn handled 3.000,0 thousand tons of cargo (oil and chemistry products constitute nearly 70 percent of overall handling turnover). Klaipėda Seaport handled more by 180,3 thousand tons and together with the handling results of Butinge Terminal the increase should be even higher – nearly 980 thousand tons.
