India Posts releases special new cover on Air India

The 100 years celebrations of Aviation Industry in India commenced in Delhi recently. On this occasion, India Post while acknowledging Air India’s support to the Indian Postal Department, released a special cover on February 18, 2011 at the international stamp exhibition, Indipex 2011, held at New Delhi. The exhibition was held from February 12, to February 19, 2011.


Founded by JRD Tata in July 1932, Tata Airways became a public limited company on July 29, 1946 under the name of Air India after World War II. As a result of passing of the Air Corporation Act by the Govt. of India on August 1, 1953, to provide safe, efficient, adequate, economical and properly coordinated air transport services whether domestic or international or both the then existing eight air companies namely; Air India Ltd, Air Services of India Ltd., Airways (India) Ltd., Bharat Airways Ltd., Deccan Airways Ltd., Himalayan Aviation Ltd., Indian National Airways Ltd. and Kalinga Airlines were nationalized.


Pursuing the objective set under the Air Corporations Act 1953, Air India has now been in the service of nation for over 78 years.


During this period Air India has served as the national carrier of India carrying not only passengers and cargo but also mail for the Indian Postal Service.


Indipex 2011 is organized by India Post, Government of India in collaboration with the Philatelic Congress of India (PCI) under the patronage of the Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FIP) and the auspices of the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP).
