Taichung port starts shipping farm goods to northeast China

Five containers carrying agricultural products worth US$440,000 were delivered to Taiwan's Taichung Port recently for shipment to Liaoning Province, the first time the central Taiwan city has sold farm goods to northeastern China, reported Asia Pulse.

The containers, loaded with honey murcotts – a type of tangerine – mushrooms, honey, plum wines, and Lishan tea, were sent to the city's port after an agreement on the sale of the agricultural goods was signed by representatives from Taichung and the Chinese province.

Taichung Mayor Jason Hu said it was the first time a province in northeastern China has bought agricultural goods from Taichung, and he anticipated that Liaoning would make additional purchases.
He described Taichung and Liaoning as highly complementary, and he said he hoped to see friendly interaction take place between the two sides from now on.

Chen Zhenggao, governor of the Chinese province, said this first purchase would be followed by second, third, and countless other purchases, adding that the purchasing group was willing to ship to Liaoning whatever Taichung farmers were willing to sell them.

In the past, northern China has relied on importing goods from Taiwan through coastal cities such as Xiamen, so directly exporting Taiwanese fruit and agricultural products to northern China was a huge breakthrough, said Wang Ying, director-general of the Industrial Development and Investment Promotion Committee of Taichung City.
