THE Port of Savannah handled 132,257 containers or 237,004 TEU in January 2011, which yielded a fiscal year-to-date increase of 14.3 per cent and 13.3 per cent, respectively.
Container tonnage amounted to 1,887,179 tons. More than 200 vessels called on the port last month, an increase of 20 per cent compared with the same month last year, said a statement from the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA).
"The Port of Savannah continues to provide the best option for moving cargo with its single-terminal campus featuring two on-terminal intermodal container transfer facilities," said GPA executive director Curtis Foltz, in a statement.
Breakbulk tonnage for the ports of Savannah and Brunswick totalled 171,761 tons in January, up 43 per cent year on year. At the Port of Brunswick, auto and machinery units almost doubled to 37,313 units.
The statement added that GPA experienced "exceptional" intermodal growth in January with 25,877 rail moves, which authorities described as being "the second best month ever."
