INCREASING violence in South Africa's national truck strike has induced Safmarine to cancel deliveries to and from the Johannesburg's City Deep inland container depot, reports London's Containerisation International.
"We have cancelled all export and import deliveries to and from City Deep. The situation will be monitored carefully and deliveries will only resume when it is safe to do so," said Safmarine in a notice to trade.
City Deep is the big distribution and collection point for Johannesbug and Pretoria cargo to and from Durban, and accounts for much of the Indian Ocean port city's annual 2.7 million container volume. Ten container trains daily run between the two.
But Safmarine said it was business as usual elsewhere in the country with cargo flows in and out Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth unmolested by strikers, but the Maersk's north-south specialist also reported a march was planned for Durban so short-notice changes can be expected.'
