Boeing starts up defence plant at MidAmerica St Louis

US plane maker Boeing has started production at its defence assembly plant at the former warehouse of MidAmerica St Louis Airport based on the Illinois side of the Mississippi.


The manufacturing plant covers 4,645 square metres and will employ 75 by mid-2012. The start-up phase employs 14, with plans to double by second quarter for assembly and sub-assembly of the F/A-18 fighter jet, the C-17 Globemaster III cargo plane, and its CH-47 Chinook helicopter.


The state of Illinois is providing funding of US$2.3 million with Boeing investing a further $7 million.
