Budapest air freight up 32pc to 82,638 tonnes in 2010

Feb 16, 2011 Port

BUDAPEST Airport freight volume increased 32 per cent to 82,638 tonnes in 2010, reports the UK's Transport Intelligence.

Its new Cargo City, now under construction, is expected to be built in late 2012. The airport is served by 53 cargo operators from Cargolux, which added a fifth weekly Hong Kong 747-400F flight last year, and El Al to the major integrator flights of UPS, DHL, TNT and FedEx as well as smaller feeder carriers.

Together they will contribute to an increase in cargo capacity over the next two years to 250,000 tonnes annually, more than doubling today's 120,000-tonne capacity.

"The result was satisfying in what has been a turbulent year," said airport vice president and cargo chief Christa Soltau, who remarked that last year's volume came close to the record highs of 2007.

"Budapest has access to a catchment area of 20 European markets within 1,000 kilometres and we are playing an increasingly important role for logistics and distribution in the central eastern European market and beyond," she said.
