JIANGSU government's latest statistics show that provincial ports handled 1.5 billion tonnes' cargo in 2010, doubled the figure in 2005.
Last year, provincial container throughput surpassed 11 million TEU, Xinhua reports.
During the five-year period from 2006 to 2010, Jiangsu invested CNY47 billion (US$7.2 billion) on port construction projects. Its port throughput grew 20 per cent annually in this period.
Jiangsu now has six ports with an annual throughput of over 100 million tonnes, including Lianyungang, Nanjing, Suzhou, Nantong, Zhenjiang and Jiangyin. One hundred and fifty-two new berths of over 10,000 tonnes each were built in this period, raising the total to 366. 103 of them are over 50,000 tonnes.
Last year, the Port of Lianyungang recorded a container throughput of 3.9 million TEU while the Port of Taicang handled 2.2 million TEU.
During the earlier five-year period from 2000 to 2005, the province's container throughput was growing at an annual rate of 30 per cent.
