Because of rising demand, DP World is to commence construction of Terminal 3 at Jebel Ali Port, although it is unlikely it will open before the end of the current year.
Occupancy levels at existing installations are now running at more than 80% and companies in the adjacent free zone are worried that they may lose customers.
Originally, the third terminal was not to be built until 2013, based on predictions of economic recovery. Terminals 1 and 2 opened in 2009 at a cost of $1.5bn.
