NY-NJ to stamp out redundant working practices

Jan 27, 2011 Port

Officials managing terminals in the port of New York-New Jersey say they are doing everything they can to eliminate inefficient labour practices, although stress this can only be comprehensively achieved as part of a collective bargaining agreement.

The stevedoring sector in the port has been allegedly characterised by the presence of ghost jobs, nepotism and the influence of organised crime, all of which are seen as adversely affecting the ability the port to be competitive.

Terminal operators recognise that many of today's working practices were brought in when the port was changing from break bulk working to containerisation, but unilaterally changing these is virtually impossible.

Some timekeepers at the port now earn an annual salary of $200,000-$300,000.
