Melbourne: The Australian port of Melbourne posted record high trades in containers and new motor vehicles in 2010, as overall trade rose 13.2% year-on-year. The Port of Melbourne Corporation recorded 78.8m tonnes of trade in 2010, boosted by a record box throughput of 2.35m teu, up 12.6% over the previous year.

The port's new motor vehicle trade also jumped to record levels, rising 34.7% to 398,000 units. “Trade through the port of Melbourne remained resilient during the global financial crisis but the strong rebound across almost all cargo types has exceeded our expectations,” said Stephen Bradford, ceo of the port corporation.

The 2010 full year figures were finalised after December figures showed container throughput of 205,500 TEUs, representing a 6.6% increase over the same period in 2009. New motor vehicle trade fell 0.6% over the corresponding period the previous year.
