New cranes for Fos

Jan 24, 2011 Port

The first ship-to-shore cranes have been delivered to one of the Fos 2XL container terminals being developed at Marseilles Fos under public-private partnership.

Two super post-Panamax gantries arrived on 20 December for the new terminal. This is due to start services in March under an operating concession granted to Port Synergy, a joint venture between CMA CGM and DP World.

The 90 metre tall cranes were delivered fully erected and will be able to handle the world’s largest container carriers. Their arrival was celebrated by the port authority, which was responsible for developing the quay before leaving landside development to the private operators.

Under the Fos 2XL project, a second terminal will be operated by MSC, which is taking delivery of two similar cranes next year before launching operations in early 2012. With both new terminals in service, container capacity at Fos will double to two million teu per year.
