LONG BEACH terminals handled 6.3 million TEU in 2010, a 1.2 million TEU increase of 25 per cent year on year, the biggest annual leap since 1971 when the port leased the first container terminal.
"This was a tremendous rebound, and happened much faster than predicted," said Port of Long Beach executive director Richard Steinke. "Best of all, the additional cargo has brought back thousands of port-related jobs throughout the supply chain - and we're very optimistic that the job growth in this industry will continue in 2011."
Overall container moves increased 23.6 per cent from 2009, which almost recovered the losses recorded in 2009. Imports were up 23.4 per cent to 3,128,860 TEU and exports were up 15.6 per cent to 1,562,398 TEU. Empties were also up 33.2 per cent to 1,572,241 TEU in 2010.
In December, the port handled 523,311 TEU, up 12 per cent year on year, indicating the 13 months of gains in a row. Imports in December were up 10.4 per cent to 256,889 TEU, and exports were up 14.7 per cent to 141,140 TEU, while empty container moves were up 12.3 per cent to 125,282 TEU.
