DP World’s new Port Qasim terminal opens

Jan 14, 2011 Port

DP World opened its new container terminal in Port Qasim near Karachi in Pakistan on Wednesday Jan 12, 2010 by celebrating the arrival of its first customer, the 276 m long and 40 m wide French container vessel CMA CGM Wagner.

The opening of Terminal 2 will take capacity at DP World Karachi’s Port Qasim - Pakistan’s first dedicated international container terminal - to around 1.2m teu from around 900,000 teu and marks the successful completion of the first of the three phase development – the largest ever investment in the port sector in Pakistan.

Built on 13 hectares of reclaimed land, Terminal 2’s quay is 670 m long and is equipped with three gantry cranes capable of handling vessels of around 6,700 teu capacity, and six RTGs.

In line with market demand, Terminal 2 will be developed in a further two phases of heavy duty pavement expansion over a period of several years. Each future phase of the terminal will be fully integrated and compatible with the existing terminal.
