The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) registered an increase of 11 per cent in overall throughput growth in calendar year 2010 despite the relatively less-than-satisfactory global economic scenario, Mr L. Radhakrishnan, Chairman of JNPT, disclosed.

In the Chairman’s customary meeting with Port customers and other stakeholders/agencies early in the New Year, he exchanged greetings with those present and explained the various schemes and initiatives being taken for capacity addition up to 10 million TEUs.

These included the 4th container terminal, 330-metre extension of existing jetty, deepening of channel, etc., as well as JNPT’s commitments towards environmental and social responsibilities.

While highlighting the Port’s performance, Mr S. N. Maharana, Chief Manager (Operations), revealed that the Port handled 4.28 million TEUs of container traffic in 2010, a rise of 10.96 per cent over 2009.

Representatives from terminal operators and MANSA also congratulated the JNPT management and expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure and services provided to them.
