The Port of Colombo [POC], Sri Lanka has set a new record by handling 4m teu last year through the state-run Jaya Container Terminal [JCT] and the privately-owned South Asia Gateway Terminals [SAGT].
JCT handled 2.1m teu, the lion share of the overall volume, with the remaining 1.9m teu being handled by SAGT.
This total represents an increase of 20% compared to the same period in 2009 and shows an increase of 11 % compared to the total figure of 3.68m teu handled in 2008, the highest-ever performance rate recorded by the Port of Colombo before the recession hit global trade.
Last year’s total volume included a 25% increase in local import/exports and an 18% increase in transhipment over the corresponding period in 2009.
