The Indonesian public works ministry said an international port would soon be built on the island of Madura to help reduce congestion in Tanjung Perak port, the country's second largest port in the East Java.
The port will be built in Tanjung Bumi to cost around US$1.11 billion, deputy public works minister Hermanto Dardak said, Asia Pulse reported.
The new port is planned to take advantage of the operation of the new Suramadu bridge spanning the sea between the island and mainland Java, Hermanto said yesterday.
He said construction of the new port is vital as Tanjung Perak has overused its capacity and to boost industrialisation in Madura.
He said construction is expected to start this year.
